Born in Derry in 1940 and trained as an Art Teacher, teaching from 1963 to 1966. In 1970/71 he spent a year at Bera Academy of Fine Art, Milan, Italy.
Since 1966, he has been on the staff of the Arts Council of Northern Ireland and in 1991 was appointed Chief Executive. He has exhibited widely and has won several prestigious awards including the Leverhulme European Fellowship. In 1980, he was commissioner at the Paris Biennale and, in 1985, at the Sao Paolo Bienal.
