Gavin Lavelle
Gavin Lavelle was born 1969. He obtained a B.A. Fine Art (Painting) in National College of Art & Design in Dublin in 1991. He is currently living and working in Clifden, Co.Galway.
Lavelle uses acrylic paint on gesso-prepared paper or wood, and images from a variety of sources: maps, anatomical & bird books, biology and botanical sourcebooks, historical and travel books and catalogues. His work features renaissance or Victorian genre paintings, maps and diagrams as a template. Lavelle is fascinated by ideas surrounding history, mythology, and an alternative imagination regarding history and the concept of “what might have been”.
Inclusion, categorisation and cross-referencing are all considered in the work. A framework has been developed and a language is used which can enable the viewer to enter the paintings, should they choose.
