John F McLaughlin
I am an Irish artist based in Belfast, working in a wide range of media including, painting, photography and sculpture. Over the past 15 years I have been specialising in bronze cast sculpture. My background comes from extensive experience in Art teaching and education over many years.
Background inspiration and creative thinking:
Sources for my studio work come from many areas including the Classical world of Greek & Roman art and sculpture through to other art influences including High Renaissance, Art Nouveau, Cubism and Abstract Expressionism. My work celebrates the complexity of the human form and the infinite possibilities derived from the human condition. Outcomes often evolve from a long process of modification and experimentation working from the realistic towards the abstract. The artwork ranges in scale from small maquette studies to more individual larger pieces. Final bronze pieces are exhibited in local galleries and in annual public exhibitions.
Recent work on public Display:
RUA Exhibition 2022 / 2023 / 2024 (selected work)
RHA Exhibition 2023 preselected work & selected work 2024)
Bronze processes & techniques:
Sketches and photographic recording are usually the start of my processes, based on the human figure or other visual stimuli, leading to experimental modelling work in clay / plaster / wax. These experiments are worked up in the studio and then moved to the foundry for the casting process. Bronze outcomes are produced using either sand casting or the lost wax process. Sculptural influences include Ronan Gillespie, John Behan, F E Mc William, Henry Moore among others.
