Melita Denaro
Melita Denaro, born in Burt, Co. Donegal in 1950, pursued her studies in Ceramics at the Central School of Art in London from 1975 to 1978. She later completed a Postgraduate Diploma in Painting at the Royal Academy School in 1992.
Denaro divides her time between Donegal and London, drawing inspiration from the rugged landscapes of the Inishowen peninsula. Her art is deeply influenced by the region's expressive skies, scattered livestock, and craggy shorelines.
She persistently paints the same areas of the Donegal headland, creating an intimate and personal portrayal of the land. Her detailed painting titles often reflect the network of relationships with friends, family, and neighbors, highlighting that her work, while focused on landscapes, also embodies the human emotions and narratives we attach to them.
In 1994, Denaro received The Armitage Prize and The David Murray Travelling Scholarship. The following year, she was honored with The Creswick Prize and the Royal Academy Silver Medal. Her work has been exhibited in both solo and group shows at John Martin, London, the Glebe Gallery, Donegal, the Solomon Gallery, Dublin, Royal Hibernian Academy Annual Exhibitions, and Royal Academy Summer Shows. She has been associated with Taylor Galleries since the early 2000s.
Denaro's work is held in the public collections of the Irish State, Donegal County Council, AIB, Guinness, and Hambros Bank in London, as well as in the private collections of notable figures such as Oprah Winfrey and H.R.H. The Prince of Wales.
