Michael Cullen's works have been included in some of the most important theme based shows of Irish contemporary art in Ireland and abroad. What distinguishes Cullen from many other painters of his generation, is his belief that the task of painting is to remain open to the influences of one's own environment - to give priority to one's own existential situation. He believes that 'the rationalist cannot dance'.
Born in 1946, he has lived in Spain, Mexico and France. In 1985, due to his contribution to Irish art he became an elected member of Aosdana (the Irish Academy of Arts). He has had numerous solo shows in Ireland and his works are in the collections of the National Gallery of Ireland, the Irish Museum of Modern Art, the Ulster Museum, the Arts Council of Northern Ireland, Trinity College and many other public and private collections in Ireland and around the world.
