Tom Byrne, born in Dublin in 1962, pursued his artistic education at Dun Laoghaire College of Art and Design. He was trained in the Bauhaus tradition, a pioneering school of the 20th century that fused craftsmanship, art, and technology. Byrne's work is heavily influenced by religion, politics, and celebrity, elements he regards as equally significant in his art. With a keen interest in current affairs and a punk attitude, Byrne creates art that reflects his awareness of the world around him. His work is informed by both spirituality and popular culture, and he sees himself primarily as a contemporary artist. Byrne draws inspiration from everyday beauty, transforming it into abstract paintings. His explorations of the aftermath of the Celtic Tiger with it's new found fascination with sex and money are riveting

Samuel Beckett and James Joyce, prominent Irish writers, have greatly influenced Byrne's work. His portrait series pays tribute to these intellectuals, portraying them with a "veristic" approach reminiscent of ancient Roman portraits, characterized by intricate details such as skin furrows and wrinkles. Byrne modernizes this technique with loose brushstrokes, occasional impasto, and a vibrant colour palette. His Portrait series has been showcased at notable venues including Lissadell House in Co. Sligo, City Assembly House (Irish Georgian Society) in Dublin, and the Luan Gallery in Athlone.

Tom Byrne's unique style is characterized by luxurious textures, created through nuanced, lush layers of paint and structured colour. His paintings feature swirls of jewel-like colours that transcend into opaque, opulent washes of tone, all mediated by his own aesthetic experiences.
