Lot 26 - After The Gig by Patrick Baird Medium: I first photographed Van in Belfast in the mid-'60s. He was back in Ireland briefly, having released 'Brown Eyed Girl' in the USA. We became friends. I shot pictures of him under the railway bridge near Cyprus Avenue, at my home in Belmont and in my studio. These pictures were sent to his record company's owner, Bert Berns, in the US. Sadly, Berns died not long after and the negatives were lost. In 1974 I was freelancing in London and arranged to shoot pictures of Van on stage at the Hammersmith Odeon and after the gig in his dressing room. Van was relaxed, smiling, making jokes, talking about Belfast days. Did he miss anything in particular, I asked, now that he was living in California? He paused for a moment and said there were a few things. Although he wasn't a serious soccer fan, he said, he missed hearing the football results on the radio. "There's a place in the valley where I can get them on Short Wave" he said. "Sometimes I go there and listen". Patrick Baird, 2015 This image is number two in a limited edition of five. It is Giclee printed using archival inks and paper. The original was a 35mm negative on Tri-X film. Size: 27" x 40" / 69cm x 102cm Estimate: £400 - £600 Result: Not Sold
